Tonnou W.G. Ghothane, widely known as “Tonnou Dai” within the Nepali diaspora, stands today as a
respected lawyer, community leader, and social advocate whose inspiring journey reflects the possibilities
of hard work and commitment abroad.
Early Life and Education
Born on November 11, 1975, in Kathmandu, Nepal, Ghothane comes from a family with a proud army
heritage and belongs to Nepal’s Gurung community. He spent his formative years at St. Xavier’s School,
Jawalakhel, where his passion for community service blossomed early. As a student, he took on leadership
roles: from being elected president of the Student Council to representing his class at St. Xavier’s Campus,
Maitighar, where he completed his ISC (Year 12).
His diverse interests included drama, sports, painting, reading, and academic competitions, experiences
that built his strong foundation for community engagement.
A New Chapter in Australia
On June 2, 1996, Ghothane migrated to Australia to pursue higher education at City College, marking the
start of a remarkable journey in a new land. Like many new migrants, he took up jobs in hospitality, working
as a dishwasher at the well-known Italian restaurant Papa Gino in Carlton. Rising from dishwasher to waiter
and eventually floor manager, he credits these early work experiences with shaping his values of work
ethic, discipline, and loyalty.
He then pursued his Bachelor of Business at Swinburne University, majoring in marketing and information
systems with a minor in finance. His dream of opening a bank in his hometown of Pokhara did not
materialize, but his interest in serving the community remained unwavering.
After earning his Master of Information Technology from Swinburne, he secured permanent residency in
Australia. However, unsatisfied with a career as a programmer, Ghothane sought more meaningful work
that would help migrants like himself navigate Australia’s complex immigration landscape.
Establishing Himself in Law
Recognizing the potential to serve migrants more effectively, Ghothane pursued a Graduate Certificate in
Australian Immigration Law and Practice and a Bachelor of Laws from Victoria University. After starting as
a Registered Migration Agent in 2007, he gained valuable experience working as a lawyer at M Joseph and
Associates.
In 2018, he established Ghothane Lawyers, where he currently serves as principal lawyer, leading a
dedicated team that provides trusted, client-focused legal services across Melbourne and beyond.
A Leader Beyond the Courtroom
Alongside his legal career, Ghothane has tirelessly championed community service in Australia. He is an
active member of the Rotary Club of Broadmeadows and has held key positions in major Nepali community
organizations, including serving as President of the Non-Resident Nepali Association (NRNA) Australia in
2017 and Secretary in 2015. From 2001 to 2007, he also served as Joint Secretary of the Nepalese
Association of Victoria and has provided pro bono legal advice to several Nepali and multicultural
organizations.
His dedication has earned him honorary memberships at the Tamang Society of Victoria, Gulmi Samaj
Victoria Australia, and Chitwan Samaj Victoria — distinctions that are rarely awarded to community leaders.
Mental Health Advocacy and Youth Empowerment
Committed to causes beyond law, Ghothane actively supports mental health and family violence awareness
campaigns, donating generously and raising public awareness. In 2020, he was named Australian
Multicultural Ambassador at Mental Health Foundation Australia, recognizing his impact on community well-
being.
A firm believer in the power of sports to unite and empower youth, he continues to mentor and support local
cricket, soccer, and basketball teams within Melbourne’s Nepali community.
Inspiration Through Music
Amid a concerning rise in mental health struggles and suicides among young Nepali migrants, renowned
Nepali singer Pramod Nirman released a motivational song titled Australia Ko Tonnou Dai in 2024. The
song, inspired by Ghothane’s life story, aims to instill hope and resilience in listeners. The music video has
already amassed over 556,000 views on YouTube, resonating deeply with the diaspora.
Looking Ahead
Today, Tonnou Ghothane remains a prominent figure in both the legal and community sectors, known for
his open-door policy, warmth, and willingness to help anyone in need. His journey exemplifies how
dedication, community spirit, and professional excellence can intersect to create a lasting impact far from
one’s homeland.
